Description
A row of geese (hamsa), the bird carved in bands around Indian temples and on Ashokan pillar capitals.
From the stone carving of Indian temples: the lotus on the ceiling, the creeper around the doorway, the geese in the frieze and the tower above the shrine. Each of these motifs has been carved for well over a thousand years. Wide and low, the classic shape for the centre of a flat door.
